“I Thought it was a photo!!”
This is one of the most common reactions to Alison Philpott’s pencil drawings.
Alison was born in Northern Ireland, where she remembers fondly her first art instruction as a small child from her draftsman Grandfather. She maintained her love and learning of art and after moving to BC with her family and raising their two boys, she found that she still enjoyed the details in the things around her through ordinary graphite pencils. As the boys grew more independent, she began to participate in the local arts community in earnest, while honing her technique.
She discovered coloured pencils and never looked back as they gave her the ability to work in colour with the control of the pencils she was so comfortable with.
Alison has won international awards for her coloured pencil work, and has pieces in private collections in four continents. She has memberships in several art groups, including the Fort Langley Artists Group.
She loves nothing better than answering questions about her work, materials and tools, such as 600 grit sandpaper, kitchen skewers, different varieties of pencils and even some of the drafting tools her grandfather had used.
