Lynn Sykes
Lynn Sykes is a contemporary artist painting exclusively in oils for about the past fifteen years. She and her husband have been raising foster children, various animals and flower gardens for 30 years on acreage in Langley Township. The last couple of years has been especially challenging as, for Sykes, it became apparent that painting came from a place of joy and contentment and that has been difficult to find for awhile now. Gratefully, the slump is finally over and painting has again become an integral part of her day.
Sykes spends many hours gathering and taking pictures, cropping, zooming and rearranging to create unique images. With a particular love of nature, flowers and the unique, she paints in a highly detailed representational style with an eye especially to the use of light and shadow. Right or wrong she believes it’s not worth taking the camera out if the sun’s not shining. The use of colour and the importance of it and its complements and values has also become a part of her style. In the past few years Sykes has been expanding her subject matter to include landscapes and still life as well as attempting different styles of painting especially with more use of the palette knife. She attempts to take a subject and show it in a unique way and believes that her paintings are successful if they bring joy in some way to the viewer.
